Inland & Replica Lighthouses

Colorado

1. Frisco Bay Marina Lighthouse

  1. Location: Frisco Bay Marina, Dillon Reservoir, Frisco, Summit County, CO
  2. Coordinates: 39° 34′ 40.59″ N, 106° 05′ 18.84″ W
  3. Status: Decorative.
  4. History: This small lighthouse is a decorative feature of the Frisco Bay Marina on the shores of Dillon Reservoir. At over 9,000 feet in elevation, it is one of the highest "lighthouses" in the country. It is not a navigational aid but serves as a landmark for the marina and the adjacent "Lighthouse Lawn" event space.
  5. Viewing Information: The lighthouse is fully accessible for viewing at the public Frisco Bay Marina.

Lake Havasu Lighthouses (Arizona & California)

The Lake Havasu lighthouses are a unique collection of functional, scaled-down replicas of famous and historic lighthouses from around the United States and Canada. This project was started by the Lake Havasu Lighthouse Club to improve nighttime navigation on the lake in a creative way. The lighthouses are operational, Coast Guard-approved aids to navigation. Replicas of East Coast lighthouses are on the eastern side of the lake and have red beacons, while West Coast replicas are on the western (California) side and have green beacons. Great Lakes replicas are situated on the island.

Maine

1. Ladies Delight Lighthouse

  1. Location: Cobbosseecontee Lake, Winthrop, Kennebec County, ME
  2. Coordinates: 44.3005° N, 69.9142° W (Approximate)
  3. Status: Active. Maintained by the Cobbosseecontee Yacht Club.
  4. History: Built in 1908, this is the only lighthouse in Maine on a lake and one of the very few inland lighthouses in the nation to have been an official U.S. government aid to navigation. The 25-foot stone tower was constructed by the Cobbosseecontee Yacht Club to mark a dangerous underwater ledge for the steamboats that were popular on the lake at the time. Though the federal government deactivated the light in the 1970s, the yacht club has continued to maintain and operate it ever since. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
  5. Viewing Information: The lighthouse is located on a rocky shoal in the middle of Cobbosseecontee Lake and is only accessible by boat. There are no tours, but it is a well-known landmark for local boaters.

Missouri

1. Mark Twain Memorial Lighthouse

  1. Location: Hannibal, Marion County, MO
  2. Coordinates: 499 Main St, Hannibal, MO (Approx. 39.7155° N, 91.3575° W)
  3. Status: Decorative.
  4. History: This lighthouse is a memorial and has never served as a navigational aid on the Mississippi River. The original structure was built in 1935 to commemorate the 100th birthday of Mark Twain, Hannibal's most famous citizen. That tower was destroyed by a windstorm in 1960 and was rebuilt. The current lighthouse is a complete reconstruction from 2019, built for Hannibal's bicentennial.
  5. Viewing Information: The lighthouse sits atop Cardiff Hill, offering panoramic views of Hannibal and the Mississippi River, and is accessible from Illinois. Visitors can take a staircase of 244 steps from Main Street to reach the park at the top. The tower itself is not open to the public.

New Hampshire

1. Burkehaven Light

  1. Location: Lake Sunapee, Sullivan County, NH
  2. Coordinates: 43°22'01.5"N 72°03'30.3"W (43.3671, -72.0584)
  3. Status: Active. Privately maintained.
  4. History: This is one of three privately maintained lighthouses on Lake Sunapee, established by the Lake Sunapee Protective Association to improve boating safety. It was first lit in 1893.
  5. Viewing Information: Only accessible by private boat or visible on a Lake Sunapee sightseeing cruise.

2. Herrick Cove Light

  1. Location: Lake Sunapee, Sullivan County, NH
  2. Coordinates: 43°19'49.0"N 72°01'57.0"W (43.3303, -72.0325)
  3. Status: Active. Privately maintained.
  4. History: Another of the Lake Sunapee lights, this small tower was established in 1894. These lights were funded by steamboat operators and local residents.
  5. Viewing Information: Only accessible by private boat or visible on a Lake Sunapee sightseeing cruise.

3. Loon Island Light

  1. Location: Lake Sunapee, Sullivan County, NH
  2. Coordinates: 43°24'00.8"N 72°04'52.4"W (43.4002, -72.0812)
  3. Status: Active. Privately maintained.
  4. History: The first of the Lake Sunapee lights, established in 1893. It stands on a small, rocky island and is a beloved local landmark.
  5. Viewing Information: Only accessible by private boat or visible on a Lake Sunapee sightseeing cruise.

Nebraska

1. Linoma Lighthouse (Linoma Beach)

  1. Location: Near Ashland, Sarpy County, NE
  2. Coordinates: 41°3′44″N 96°19′8″W
  3. Status: Decorative.
  4. History: The Linoma Beach resort opened in 1924 at a former sand quarry site halfway between Lincoln and Omaha (hence the name "Lin-Oma"). In 1939, the 100-foot lighthouse was built as a conspicuous piece of roadside architecture to attract visitors to the privately owned recreation area. It has never been an official aid to navigation. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a well-preserved example of this type of structure.
  5. Viewing Information: The lighthouse is a prominent landmark on U.S. Highway 6. It is on private property, part of the Linoma Lighthouse recreation area.

2. Lake Minatare Lighthouse

  1. Location: Lake Minatare State Recreation Area, Scotts Bluff County, NE
  2. Coordinates: 41.93306°N, 103.49556°W
  3. Status: Decorative.
  4. History: This 55-foot stone tower was built between 1937 and 1939 by the Veterans Conservation Corps, a New Deal agency that provided jobs to unemployed veterans. It was never intended as a functional lighthouse but rather as a shelter house and observation tower. It is one of only seven "folly" or inland lighthouses in the United States.
  5. Viewing Information: Located within the Lake Minatare State Recreation Area (a state park permit is required for entry). The historic tower is open to the public for climbing and offers spectacular views of the lake and surrounding valley.

Utah

1. Cedar City Lighthouse (Providence Center)

  1. Location: Cedar City, Iron County, UT
  2. Coordinates: 337 S. Main St. #B30, Cedar City, UT (Approx. 37.6719° N, 113.0625° W)
  3. Status: Decorative.
  4. History: This 88-foot lighthouse was built in 2000 as an iconic landmark for the Providence Center shopping development. It is a "folly" lighthouse, located 450 miles from the nearest ocean, and has never served as a navigational aid. A local story, attributed to one of the developers, jokes that it was built in preparation for a major earthquake, after which it would stand on the "new" Pacific Coast.
  5. Viewing Information: The lighthouse is a prominent and easily accessible landmark in Cedar City. It is not open for climbs, but it is a popular spot for photos.
